What happens after the procedure?

Bed rest is required for a short time (~ 2 hours) and you may leave the hospital within 4-8 hours after the procedure; sometimes overnight admission is required if the procedure is performed in the afternoon.

You are discharged with analgesia (to be taken as required) and you are able to resume normal activities within a few days. Prolonged driving, heavy exertion/heavy lifting should be avoided for about one week.

You may experience flank (often left sided) pain for about one week; this responds well to anti-inflammatory medications.

Your first menstrual period after the procedure can sometimes be unusually heavy.

An ultrasound, chest and abdominal X-ray are routinely performed before follow up (this is normally performed 4-6 weeks after the procedure).

Not infrequently the visible leg varicose veins may require further treatment. If you have leg varicose veins these can now be treated with a lowered chance of recurrence.

By sealing the faulty veins the pelvic and vulval varicose veins should gradually shrink and the symptoms related to these veins will also improve.
